Halloween Safety Tips: Lead in inexpensive jewellry can harm your children

(NC)-Lead is found in both imported and Canadian-made jewellry, and many different retail outlets sell it. These items are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and may be metal plated or coated with enamel.

Health Canada carried out a nationwide marketplace survey of inexpensive jewellry (retail cost of less than $20). Laboratory results revealed that most contain extremely high proportions of lead: 66 of the 95 samples collected had a lead content ranging from 50% to 100%. Absorbing even small amounts of lead, through sucking or chewing for example, may harm the intellectual and behavioral development of infants and young children. If your child happens to receive inexpensive metal jewellry that may contain lead while trick-or-treating this Halloween, get rid of it immediately using normal household garbage disposal procedures. The easiest way to determine if your jewellry contains lead is to rub it on a piece of paper. If a gray mark appears, then lead is likely present.
